Position Description

Job Title: Nurse Practitioner - Oncology

Overview:

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide comprehensive healthcare services within a collaborative clinical environment. Working under the supervision of a department head and in close partnership with physicians, this role will involve direct patient care, health screenings, and disease prevention efforts. The NP will offer clinical expertise, collaborate with various healthcare professionals, and provide education, consultation, and training as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Foster a safe and professional healthcare environment to ensure quality patient care.
  • Adhere to all organization policies, procedures, and regulations, including attendance, conduct, and professional standards.
  • Prioritize exceptional customer service, interacting with patients, families, and colleagues with professionalism and courtesy.
  • Communicate effectively about services and patient care, ensuring concerns are addressed promptly.
  • Collaborate with physicians and medical teams to provide patient care within the established clinical protocols.
  • Conduct thorough medical and psychosocial assessments, including health history and physical exams.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans, ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies and following up on patient care across both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Manage ongoing care, adjusting treatment plans as necessary, and initiate referrals for specialist consultations.
  • Recognize and address oncology-related health concerns, providing interventions for treatment-related toxicities.
  • Provide expert symptom management, particularly in oncology settings, and assess patient health status to adjust medications and treatments accordingly.
  • Manage emergency and routine calls related to patient concerns, including medication management and psychosocial support.
  • Supervise chemotherapy administration, collaborating with physicians and oncology nurses to schedule treatments.
  • Write chemotherapy orders and evaluate treatment protocols.
  • Provide psychosocial support, offering counseling to patients and families while referring to appropriate social services.
  • Perform procedures such as bone marrow biopsies, removal of PICC lines, and intrathecal chemotherapy administration.
  • Evaluate and integrate complementary therapies into treatment plans, assessing their effectiveness.
  • Offer genetic counseling as part of pretest evaluations.
  • Coordinate discharge plans and follow-up care, including home health services and outpatient prescriptions.
  • Contribute to hospital rounds and patient management discussions, ensuring coordinated care across settings.
  • Participate in daily team huddles to streamline communication and enhance patient care.
  • Maintain professional development through participation in ongoing educational activities.
  • Actively engage in peer review processes and contribute to protocol reviews.
  • Educate patients and families about their health conditions, treatment plans, and self-care strategies, ensuring comprehension through effective teaching methods.
  • Advocate for patients' rights and wellbeing, demonstrating professionalism and legal awareness in documentation practices.

Qualifications:

  • Master of Science in Nursing with an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with at least 3 years of nursing experience.
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Master’s in a health-related field, and certification as a Nurse Practitioner, alongside 3 years of nursing experience.
  • At least 2 years of oncology experience preferred.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong understanding of nursing techniques and current healthcare practices.
  • In-depth knowledge of nursing regulations, including the New York State Nurse Practice Act, and adherence to professional and ethical standards.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians and multidisciplinary teams in developing care plans.
  • Proficiency in patient education and support strategies for complex health conditions.

Certifications Required:

  • Active NYS Nurse Practitioner license.
  • Certification in Adult, Family, or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (ANP, FNP, or PNP) with prescriptive privileges in New York.
  • Oncology certification (ONC) preferred.
  • Chemotherapy administration certification required.

Work Conditions:

  • Full-time, 37.5 hours per week with flexible scheduling to accommodate job duties.
  • Standard office hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with no weekend shifts.

Must Have Skills:

  • Nurse Practitioner certification (NP).
  • Oncology experience, with an emphasis on patient care and treatment management
